This is an edited extract of a speech delivered by Zia Yusuf on 12th October.
Since 2010, Tory and Labour governments have spent a staggering £32 billion of taxpayers’ money on asylum, in real terms. Just think of the good that that money could have done the British people.
As Russian submarines stalk our shores at the behest of a belligerent Vladimir Putin, perhaps we’d feel safer if that money had been spent on our military.
Thirty-two billion pounds buys two Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers, two Type 26 anti-submarine frigates, four Astute-class attack submarines, nine Poseidon submarine hunters, 70 F-35B Lightning fighter jets and 150 Challenger 3 battle tanks.
Or, instead of British people struggling to get access to the treatment they need, that £32 billion could have been spent on 40 state-of-the-art, world-leading hospitals.
Or, as British people look over their shoulders as they walk home, that £32 billion is the cost to hire, equip and train 70,000 extra police officers for five years.
We can’t go back and change the decisions that Tory and Labour governments made. They chose to prioritise citizens of other countries. But we can promise you that Reform will make different choices. We will put British people first.
Andy Burnham says he wants to scrap the triple lock and take money from British pensioners. We say he’s looking in entirely the wrong place.
British people are terrified of falling ill, terrified of having to go to hospital. So why on earth are they paying for free healthcare for people who broke into their country?
British people can barely afford their weekly shop and struggle to pay their rent. So why are they paying for free accommodation for people who broke into their country?
British pensioners are counting every single penny. So why are they paying for free meals for people who broke into their country?
British young people are struggling to make enough money just to move out of their parents’ home. So why are they paying for social housing for people who broke into their country?
The answer to all these questions is simple: they should not. And under a Reform government, they will not.
Reform will point every organ of state in service of one people, and one people only: the British people.
Reform is for you. If you do your bit, you play by the rules, you pay taxes, Nigel Farage will be a prime minister for you.
Today, we must be frank: Britain is full.
For too long, the British people have been told to wait forever. Wait for the ambulance. Wait for the operation. Wait for a home. Wait in their own country while foreign nationals jump the queue. The waiting ends with us.
We will put the British people first.
